60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ABERFAN DISASTER

Phil Addicott has been contacted by Alun Davies, a member of DP NARPO, regarding the 60th Anniversary of the Aberfan disaster.

Alun writes :

On Sunday 18th October 2026 at 8.00pm there is a programme in Welsh on S4C about the Aberfan disaster where 116 children and 28 adults lost their lives. I well recall this, which occurred on Friday 21st October 1966.

On Monday 24th October 1966 I joined the Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire Constabulary and went to Bridgend to commence my initial training course. I was made aware at the time that officers from other Welsh Police forces went to supplement Police officers of Merthyr Borough Police in which Aberfan was located.

There is also another programme on BBC1 at 9.00pm on Monday 19th October 2026 about the Aberfan tragedy. The question I ask is are there any retired  Dyfed-Powys officers who went to Aberfan to assist the local Police?

N.B. If you have any recollections of the disaster please forward to Phil Addicott or Hugh Colley for inclusion in the forthcoming newsletter.
